My Happy Place - Snowflake Challenge Day 1

My happy place has often been within fictional worlds. My first was Star Wars. I loved it with the passion of a child whose world has suddenly opened up. I wanted to be Princess Leia. (She wasn't a general yet when we met.) I believed in the Force and still do believe in the interconnectedness of all things. Star Wars grounds me and reminds me that an individual can make a difference.
As I grew, the number of fandoms I loved grew as well. Captain Picard showed me how to live with intelligence and integrity. Animaniacs taught me that we all need zaniness in our lives. Harry Potter showed me that we all have bad days and can be jerks sometimes, but that's okay. And then there was Doctor Who.
I used to watch Doctor Who as a kid on PBS. Tom Baker is the one I remember most from those days. He went around solving problems and helping people. Doctor Who ended, and I generally forgot about it. And then the reboot came. I kept away for a time then had to catch up. I'm glad I did. The 9th and 10th Doctors were full of so much joy and excitement and pathos. I loved it. It became a happy place even when it was a scary and/or sad place. David Tennant became my Doctor. I cried when he uttered his last words - "I don't want to go." I didn't want him to go. But we got a new Doctor. But as much as I like Smith and Capaldi, Doctor Who didn't feel the same for me. It was a nice place to visit, but it was no longer my happy place. And then they announced Jodi Whittaker as the 13th Doctor. I was excited but cautious, not expecting it to become a happy place again. I watched her first episode. She was eccentric and a bit all over the place. She was the Doctor. I felt the old magic again. Here was the joy, the love, the intelligence I had missed.
They've been showing Doctor Who almost nonstop on BBC America lately. But today was the first time they started re-showing the 13th Doctor's episodes. It put me in my happy place. And tonight when they show the New Year's Day special, I will be watching, watching from my happy place.
